How to Beat Your Friends at Poker

Joining a community poker club is a great way to relax and unwind but it is no fun if you are always losing.  Poker is a game that combines some complex skills from strategic betting to psychoanalysing opponents.  If you are new to the game then it could take some time to build up the experience you need to win.

Game Rules

The first thing you need to do to have any chance of winning is to learn the rules inside/out.  You need to know the following things:

  • What game you are going to be playing (Texas holdem, Omaha etc.)
  • What cards are yours (hole cards) and which can be used the whole table (community cards)
  • When and how to bet
  • What the winning hands are

You will need to have memorised as much as you can about the game so that when you are in the middle of play you can make fast and informed decisions.  There is no point sitting down to play if you are not sure what the best winning hands are.  This will affect all of your decisions and could see you losing out on some excellent chances to win.

Strategies

Poker is a game of the mind.  It is not always the player with the best hand that wins.  Professional poker players are able to turn the game to their own advantage by adapting to others tactics and making the most of any player mistakes.  This means they can win out over other players even if they have a weak hand.

As you play in your community poker club games take notice of what the other players are doing.  Look out for any strategies in play and see how these work.  You can also find out more about poker strategies from poker books and online poker blogs.  Everyone has a different style of play and the trick is to have a number of effective strategies up your sleeve that you can fall back on.  This will allow you to become an adaptable player that is able to pounce on any opportunity that arises.

Practice

Before you can beat your friends at poker you need to practice as much as possible.  Community poker clubs are useful as they offer the chance to play against a wide range of different opponents.  This can open up your game and offer you lots of fresh new challenges.
